Panchatantra Story – The Jackal and The Drum

Once upon a time, in a forest, there lived a jackal. He was a greedy jackal and would always eat up the animal killed by other jackals of the pack. All the jackals were tired of him, so they banished him from the pack. Now he had to hunt food all of himself. One day, as he was wandering in search of food, he came upon a battlefield. A war had recently been fought in this battlefield but now it lay deserted. The jackal stood there for a while wondering whether he should go into the deserted ground and look for food. As he lingered there, he heard a great sound. This sound scared him a lot. He fell into deep thought and said, "Ah! disaster is upon me. I am as good as dead already. Only a monster can make such a sound. What kind of dangerous creature is hidden in this ground?" Frightened, he turned around and started running away. In a jungle, there lived a jackal. One day, looking for food, he wandered into a nearby village. A pack of dogs saw him and surrounded him. They attacked him and tried to drive him away. In order to save himself, the jackal ran into a nearby house. This house belonged to a washerman. The front yard of the washerman's house was full of big vats. The jackal jumped into one of these vats to hide himself. The dogs followed him but could not find him anywhere and went away. After a while, the jackal came out of the vat. What he did not release was that the vat in which he had hidden was full of blue dye and now his whole body was dyed blue. When the dogs saw him, they didn't recognize him. Once upon a time a sparrow couple decided to make their nest on a tall tree in the countryside. They worked hard to built a nest which was spacious and comfortable for the two of them. A few weeks after the nest was built, the female sparrow laid two eggs. Both the sparrows were very happy. They took turns to sit on eggs to keep them warm. Once in Africa, there lived a man and his donkey. The man earned his living by hiring his donkey out to travelers. One day, a traveler hired it to travel to a city in the desert. They set off in the morning, with the traveler sitting on donkey's back and the owner walking behind it. After traveling a few hours, the sun climbed overhead and desert became as hot as an oven. The traveler was tired and wanted to rest. He got off the donkey's back and looked for a place where he could take relief from the blazing sun. But in the hot desert, the only place that offered the shade was donkey's shadow. Once there lived a washerman and his donkey in a village. During the day, the donkey would carry the washerman's bag. During the night the washerman would set him free in the field to eat grass. However, the donkey would sneak into nearby farms and eat the fresh vegetables there. One day, while wandering thus, he met a jackal. They became friends and the donkey invited the jackal to join him on his rendezvous at night. They started meeting every night. By the day break, donkey would be back home. This went on for many days. One day the jackal said, "Uncle, I have discovered a new field with ripe, juicy cucumbers not very far off. It is nothing less than a feast for you. The Greedy Jackal

In a faraway forest there lived a greedy jackal. He was always eating. No metter how much he ate, he always remained hungry. All the animales in the jungle hid their food from the jackle. They knew that if the jackal came to know about their food, he would either steal or snatch it from them. One day the jackal was very hungry. He could not find any food in jungle so he decided to go to adjecent village to find the food. He walked to the village and hid behind the trees. He saw a few huts and children playing around them. Suddenly a door opened and an old women came out. She called out to one of the children. The jackal ran to hide behind the bushes to listen to what she said to that child.
